Suspected intoxicated driver kills 4, including toddler, in Ohio

Four Ohio residents, including a toddler, were killed recently when their car was hit by a suspected intoxicated driver.

The crash occurred in Ashtabula in the northeastern part of the state.

The 48-year-old driver of a Ram truck that hit a Toyota Corolla at the intersection of West 58th Street and Adams Avenue in the city was charged with six felonies: four counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, reckless operation and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The man has four previous convictions for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He faces 40-plus years in prison if convicted.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the man didn't obey a stop sign and hit the Corolla driven by an 18-year-old man. He was killed, as were his passengers: a 19-year-old woman, a 47-year-old woman; and a 22-month-old boy.

The teenagers were the parents of the toddler.

All the occupants of the car were properly restrained in the car. They were dead at the scene, victims of blunt-force trauma to the head, extremities and neck, according to the county coroner's office.

The driver of the pickup truck has minor injuries. He was taken to Ashtabula County Medical Center for treatment, then released into the custody of law enforcement. Bond was set at $1 million cash, surety or property

The Ohio Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

The families of the deceased continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones. They undoubtedly will watch as the criminal case against the accused proceeds in the court, but they might want to consult with a lawyer with experience with similar car crashes to discuss their options.
