Columbus tops the list of cities with the highest rate of crashes

Columbus recently came in first in a list that no city wants to be at the top of. It was named the U.S. city with the highest car crash rate per driver.

That's according to a study released at the end of last year by the online insurance comparison site QuoteWizard. To compile its list, QuoteWizard looked at data provided by drivers who used its site about accidents they'd been involved in.

Columbus was the only Ohio city to make the top 25 in that list, which included cities from coast to coast and from New England to the Carolinas and further south. There were over 24,000 crashes in the city in 2017, resulting in almost 9,000 injuries and 45,000 damaged vehicles.

Most of these were rear-end crashes, which can be caused by distracted driving or following too closely behind the car in front of you. Friday was the day of the week with the most crashes.

Of course, traveling outside of Columbus doesn't necessarily make you any safer. Over 40,000 Americans were killed in crashes throughout the country in 2017. That was up 6 percent from 2015.

We have seen numerous technological advances by car manufacturers in recent years that make our vehicles safer and even help warn us when we're about to do something unsafe, like drift into another lane. However, drivers who are distracted, under the influence or just plain reckless can still cause serious and often deadly crashes.

If you or a loved one has been injured or worse due to the actions or negligence of another driver, it's essential to find out what your legal options are. You have a right to seek compensation for expenses and damages. This can't undo what was done, but it can help you and your family move forward.
