Driving distractions and unnecessary actions

Generally speaking, there are just two things to consider when deciding if a specific action taken by a driver counts as a distraction. They are:

  • Whether or not the action was necessary
  • If the action took the driver's mind off of driving and impaired their ability

Interpreting distractions in this way shows you how widespread they are. Many people just think of cellphones and texting and driving. While texting and driving is a great example of distracted driving, you never want to assume that's all that matters. The reality is that many more distractions exist and drivers need to be aware.

For instance, a driver may decide to stream music to the car from his or her phone. When it gets to a song the driver doesn't want to hear, they pick up the phone and switch to a new song or artist. This is no different than texting. The driver still has to reach for the phone, look down at the screen, unlock the phone, scroll through the music options and select the song they want to hear. You could argue that this takes even longer than sending a short text.

Now, some necessary actions are also distracting. A driver in a new car may have a hard time locating the windshield wiper controls in a heavy rain, for instance. This is why it is important for drivers to be very familiar with their vehicles so that they can do everything they need to do to drive safely without taking their eyes off the road.

Have you been hit by a distracted driver? If so, you may need compensation for your medical bills. Make sure you know what options you have.
